While I don’t intend for this to become a video or link-only blog, I just had to share this amazing tapestry made by the women of Conche, Newfoundland and based on the famous Bayonne Tapestry.  Begun in 2006, this 150+ foot long tapestry depicts the fascinating history of Newfoundland’s French coast.

I first saw a piece about the tapestry on the CBC.  One story they didn’t cover in the video I found particularly fascinating.  The tapestry shows a woman in bed surrounded by her family.  The woman who created this section of the tapestry explained that this was her grandmother who was thought to be dying in childbirth.  Four men were sent in a boat to fetch the priest to perform last rights.  Ironically, the woman and child survived but all four men drowned.

It has always been a dream of mine to go to Newfoundland, and now I’ve got another great reason to visit (thought it’s cheaper to fly to Iceland these days).
